image gallery - greywater and water tanks

the greywater and water tanks project was undertaken in response to Australia's nation-wide continuing drought due to climate change and also because we have always tended to try to be self-sufficient where possible. The grey water system was installed in early 2007 after we renovated our ensuite and the first of the rain water tanks were installed in early-mid 2007. We are aiming to have around 20,000 litres of rain water storage within the next few years and possibly become completely water self-sufficent.

The gray water is collected from the basin and shower of the upper ensuite and temporarily held in a 500 ltr storage tank after passing through a fine mat filter. The tank is connected to a automatic pressure pump which has a draw of 10 metres and a head of 30 metres, allowing us to pump water all the way up to the roadside above our house. The greywater is used on the garden only. We have also diverted the lower bathroom greywater directly into lower gardens and the washing machine water can also be diverted in really dry weather.

At the present time we are only collecting rain water from the carport room and from about one quarter of our house room area - around 5,000 litres capacity at the moment. During the wetter winter months the greywater system is turned off giving us an extra 500 litres water storage. The rain water is currently used for all our washing.

We are currently using less than 300 litres of water per day for a family of four which we think is pretty good (in 2007 and 2008).
